Power VS Influence

Television shows and many self-help books promote the idea that the image of strength and power are necessities for success. But people are usually nervous in the presence of power. Nervous people hold their guards up making it difficult for you to uncover their true motives. You can’t influence effectively without first understanding one’s true motives.

Appearing ‘powerless’ can be your greatest strength.

Nothing lowers guards more effectively than the appearance of harmlessness. Don’t exert power. Be present for your competence – the value you can create – and extract valuable insights into what motivates people by making them feel safe.
